SUBJECT: ROBBERY
DATE: 27/09/2004

I report with regards the robbery at the Wickford Snooker Centre on Friday 20th August 1999 (20/08/1999). I attended the initial incident as the night turn CID officer.

I took the first complaint from the aggrieved Mr Alan ASHLEY and then left details of the incident with a statement and crime report in the night book for the CID day shift to carry out further enquiries. When I returned to a day shift duty which may have been a few days after the initial incident the robbery was being looked at by Ds MORAN and Dc THOMPSON.

They invited me to go with them to the Southend area where we carried out an area search in the Philpot Avenue area of the town. I believed the purpose of this search was to find a vehicle which may be involved in some way.

At some point after this search I was handed the paperwork back for investigation. When initially asked about this robbery on the 23rd September 2004 (23/09/2004) I recalled that an informant who was being handled by Dc BUTT from Southend Police, had given information.

I thought that the person being named as responsible for the robbery was Dean BOSHELL. I also recalled that I had been asked about this robbery by the Major Investigation Team when Dean BOSHELL had been murdered in Leigh on Sea.

This may be the basis of this belief. I have now been given the opportunity to view my report dated the 26th August 1999 (26/08/1999) and now know that BOSHELL was not a suspect. The report mentions a further matter which involved the future use of a firearm.

This information caused the original report to be completed and resulted in the matter being highlighted to senior officers. I have also seen a request for fingerprints to be compared against those left at the scene of the Wickford Robbery.

These people include Damon ALVIN, Ricky PERCIVAL, Stephen ELLIS and John WAKELING. My understanding now is that although the original information named the suspects for the Wickford Snooker Robbery the same person then said they were not involved.

This was the reason for the fingerprint search against the named suspects. The result of this request was negative and with no further witnesses the matter was finalised.
